my first exhibition

So right now two of my pieces from HNC are being exhibited! I am extremely excited about this as it is the first time my work has been shown outside of college. It is being shown along side many other local artists' work in The Social on South Tay Street in Dundee and is running until the end of Wednesday 23rd of January.

The exhibition was organised and created by my sister, Nicola Coupe, who graduated from DJCAD in June. This is the first exhibition that she alone has put together and I am really pleased for her! So if anyone is in town and would like to have a look please come on down!
This collection of work was based on ripples. And here are some photos..

This piece is made from paper and was achieved by using a batik wax technique and bleach

This is a textile piece and was achieved by using two layers, both with a batik wax technique along with dyes, cut outs and suspended pieces below.

my plea!

So its a new year and a new semester at college for me. Now for one of my projects this year its all about reusing and therefor recycling. Its about being responsible with our materials and we were left to choose our own theme but the idea was that there was to be a meaning behind it, something sustainable. So I thought to myself that wildlife, nature, the ecosystem was a very sustainable process, until we (humans) became part of it. We are the ones tearing down the forests, destroying habitats and killing the animals that live there with it. We are the poachers who hunt animals for their skins to sell for profit. We kill the giant, beautiful elephants for their tusks.
My point is, cant we use other materials instead of ivory? Cant we use fake fur in the fashion industry?
What happens when we destroy everything on God's green earth? What will we do then?
And so as I am making a collection for this project I am putting out a plea: If anyone has any unused or unwanted fake/faux fur I would be grateful if you donated it to me. It doesn't matter what condition it is in as long as it is clean.

College Project

So the last few months have been very hectic! I have been up to my eyeballs with college work and deadline day is less than 2 weeks away! However, I have managed to complete one project and would love to share with you the process I have went through. Well.. at least a bit of it anyway.

So in this project we had to make a "shopper bag" - larger than A3 - and our starting point was the 2012 Olympics..

I decided to take inspiration from my favourite Olympian, Usain Bolt.

Research!

From there I got an idea to use lightning and look at Jamaican artists..

Development!

I decided to change my sample by making the black at the top instead of the bottom. I thought it would make more sense because it would make the lightning look like it was going from the sky to the ground. I thought it would look more Usain Bolt-esk if I used the Jamaican flag colours.

I got this shape from one of the Jamaican artists pieces. Again I used the Jamaican colours but I thought it needed something else so I added Usains' world record time with free-machine stitching.

So they were my final two ideas and from their I chose and made my final shopper bag..

Winters Cold Hand

Here in Scotland winter is slowly creeping in. I woke up this morning to see my entire garden covered in frost! And as it is that time of year were we all start to think about if its going to be a white Christmas or not.. I thought I would share with you some pretty winter photos that I found online.
